I grew up in Decatur, Ala, and when my family would make the occasional trip to Huntsville, I would fog the window of the car staring at the Apollo-era Saturn V rocket standing outside the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.  

Here at Shaw, we may not be flooring the space station – yet! But we’re doing many of the same things that made the space program successful. The space race was won, not by astronauts alone, but thousands of men and women on the ground who were engaged and empowered to do their best work.    

That’s why I was honored to recently accept two Global Excellence Awards from Kepner-Tregoe, a consulting firm with a legacy of coaching and leadership development that goes back to their work with the Apollo Space Program. 

Our Executive Accelerated Development Experience (EADX), a hands-on learning experience for senior leaders, was recognized with a Global Excellence Award, alongside global leaders such as Honda, ExxonMobil, Cisco Systems, Siemens and Nokia. At the same event, I was honored to be named Executive of the Year.  

Here at Shaw, we’ve built a world-class learning and development system that equips associates at all levels of the enterprise to be successful throughout their careers with us. Leadership development takes on many forms from formal classroom learning, coaching, mentoring, networking, and on-the-job experiences. 

Core Leadership Pathways is our series of cohort-based courses for each level of leadership that establishes a common language and shared methodology connected to the leadership imperatives that are required for success at Shaw. These include inclusive leadership, effective communication, strategy, innovation, problem solving and collaboration.  

Leadership development at Shaw is also underpinned by the Performance Experience (PX) an ongoing co-created experience between managers and their team members that foster better working relationships, encourage authentic conversations and discourse, and prepare associates for future aspirations that align with business needs.   

Overall, our goal is to unleash the diverse skills and perspectives of our associates to solve problems, develop plans and create solutions that create a better future for our people, our communities, and our customers.
